Wonderful C64 Demos
« on: February 08, 2010, 08:51:17 PM »

Sorry, but the C64 will always be close to my heart, and these are just wonderful......................

Remember that this machine runs a .97mhz, has just 64k, and can be ripped to bits.

Also, how about an oscilloscope demo? Is that possible?

That oscilloscope demo is very very nice.
(...must be my vector graphics addiction speaking. :))

Imagine how you'd feel if you were at the doctors having a checkup, and he hooks you up to the oscilloscope, and you se that!
...time to call your loved ones me thinks. :D

I think an oscilloscope was used to display one of the first games ever made.

The FlipTheDisk image on the C64 is amazing. It looks like it has much more than 16 colours.

It does have more than 16 colours, it's one of the tricks of the VIC chip, like the ones with sprites (putting them in the borders, showing more on the screen than the hardware allows ...).

Binary Zone offers a lot of demo collections at http://www.binaryzone.org/update0.php, had a few of them in the early '90s, maybe still have, the collections generally have at least two or three jaw-droppers.

Pong on an oscilloscope:

and the analog circuit (well, it does have a couple of flip-flops but no microprocessor) for it is described here http://www.electronixandmore.com/project/scopepong/.

All of the vector games are really just 'scope games with computer control, at least two or three of the good Star Wars games (one was great), the original Asteroids, and Spacewar at the start as good examples.

C64 do only have 16 colors. due its look more than 16 colors is because the images is interlaced (2 images that flips), and hence it would have more colors when you deinterlace that picture on a pc. Smart trick.

the pong game look like unplayable with that speed :-D

Have coded all the tricks in 6510 assembler on the 64, it only has register settings for sixteen colours but the mixing is not just field/frame, this is the first good link I could find: http://www.larshaugseth.com/c64/colmix.html. The result is a blend, not an optical illusion.

Also  ;), the Pong game sure looks unplayable but thought others here might also find it an admirable project.
